A Cedar Rapids man who reached a plea deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to 19 years in prison after stabbing and shooting at a man in 2017 has passed away.

According to a release from the Iowa Department of Corrections, Ronald Gene Gonterman was pronounced deceased due to natural causes at 11:38 p.m. on Sunday at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. Gonterman was 71 years old at the time of his death.

The incident occurred the afternoon of June 29th,  2017 in the Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area. The victim contacted authorities and told them he’d been stabbed multiple times and identified Gonterman as his assailant. The victim also alleged that Gonterman shot at him multiple times with a semi-automatic pistol and tried to run him over with his truck.

Gonterman was taken into custody later that day at his Cedar Rapids home and taken to the Johnson County Jail. He originally was charged with attempted murder but reached a plea deal and instead pleaded guilty to Willful Injury causing Serious Injury and other charges. His sentence began on March 12, 2018.
