Cedar Rapids School Superintendent Noreen Bush passed away over the weekend.

Bush had been battling cancer for the last two and a half years, and took medical leave in September as her health deteriorated. She submitted her resignation later in the month, and said she would stay on until the end of the school year.

Bush was Iowa Superintendent of the Year in 2021 after becoming Superintendent of Cedar Rapids Schools in 2019. The school board has employed an Illinois-based consulting firm to lead the search for the next superintendent, and had planned to appoint an interim superintendent at Monday’s meeting.

Bush was 51.
