A rare wind turbine fire has been brought under control after breaking out overnight.

According to a Facebook post by the Williamsburg Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the 1700 block of 230th Street in the rural part of the city for a reported wind turbine on fire just before 12:40 am Monday. Upon arrival, they saw the head of the turbine fully engulfed in flames.

Officials said this type of fire is unique and challenging, due to the possibility of falling debris on fire and the unit and its blades falling apart due to the fire. Once it was determined that the scene was safe, crews extinguished the field fire caused by the falling debris.

Mid-American Energy arrived on scene around 3 am and took over operations of the wind turbine, and fire crews were able to be placed back in service.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. A damage estimate has not been released.
