A Hope House resident is back in custody after the Department of Corrections says he absconded from the Universality of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Online records indicate that sometime on Friday 34-year-old Rakeem I’shod Eberhart became disruptive and obstructive, laid down on the floor of the Holiday Road facility, then began slamming his hands on the ground and continued to scream until he was forcibly removed.

Eberhart was transported to the UIHC, but police say he left without being seen. His whereabouts were unknown until he returned to Hope House on his own several hours later. A urine test subsequently came back positive for methamphetamine.

As police arrived to take Eberhart into custody, he reportedly slammed his head onto the Hope House floor and again began screaming and being uncooperative. Paramedics were then called, and he was returned to the UIHC.

Eberhart is charged with a probation violation. He is currently sentenced to Hope House for two criminal mischief convictions. In March of 2022, Eberhart threw merchandise around the Muscatine Avenue Walgreens and Muscatine Avenue Kum & Go in Iowa City before throwing a shopping cart through a window at the 1st Avenue Hy-Vee.

While being checked out at the UIHC last June, he spit blood into the faces and eyes of two health care providers and a security guard, leading to a conviction for Assault Causing Injury on Persons in Certain Occupations.
