Johnson County Meals on Wheels has been forced to reduce the number of weekly deliveries, citing a lack of volunteers.

The Gazette reports that starting next week and for the next 60 days, deliveries will be made three times a week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday — instead of five. Johnson County residents will receive one hot and one frozen meal on Mondays and Wednesdays, and one hot meal on Fridays. The intent is for the frozen meal to be reheated the following day.

Melissa Wahl is director of community health and nutrition for Horizons, who provide the service. She says the program has 90 registered volunteers; some regularly volunteer while others help out once a month or every other week. The meals are delivered throughout Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty between 10:30am and 1pm.

Wahl says another 10 volunteers would go a long way toward returning to five-day-a-week deliveries.  Those interested can go to www.horizonsfamily.org/volunteer .
