A plea hearing set for last week has been delayed again for an Iowa City woman charged in connection with the shooting of a Coralville man during a botched robbery attempt.

19-year-old Mya Wright of Wheaton Road and 17-year-old Jaden Miller of Columbus Junction are accused of shooting 41-year-old Kenneth James outside the Woodridge Apartments on West Adams Street in Washington on January 7th 2022.  Police say Miller approached the driver’s side of James’ vehicle and fired one shot. James drove away but crashed his car and called 911.

Police say Wright and Miller invited James to Washington under the pretense of conducting a drug deal, but were in fact planning to rob him.  The shooting occurred during the course of the attempted robbery, according to police.

Wright has had plea hearings scheduled for December 2022, February 10th, May 12th and June 9th of this year. A judge delayed the plea hearing now to September 22nd, with sentencing set for September 29th. Miller is also scheduled to be sentenced on the same day. If convicted on Attempted Murder and 1st Degree Robbery charges, each could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison.
