Iowa City Transit reports ridership on city buses increased by 53% last month as compared to August of last year. Fare Free Iowa City launched on August 1st.
The total number of trips in August was 131,420. August 2022 had 85,672 total trips, leading to an increase of 45,748 rides. The data was collected by Iowa City Transportation staff.
Every full-time City route except the North Dodge route saw a marked increase in ridership. The routes with the biggest growth were Towncrest with an 81% increase in ridership, South Iowa City with 76%, Rochester with 73%, South Gilbert with 68%, and the Downtown Shuttle with 65%.
