One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident in southwest Johnson County Tuesday afternoon, with a sheriff’s deputy being injured on his way to the scene.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2008 Ford Escape was westbound on Black Diamond Road just before 12:45pm when it drifted into the oncoming lane while navigating a curve near Hazelwood Avenue, between Windham and Highway 1. The vehicle hit an eastbound dump truck head-on. The driver of the Escape, 74-year-old Cynthia Asussen of Iowa City, was killed. The driver of the dump truck, 39-year-old Benjamin Burton of Grundy Center, was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by private vehicle.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy responding to the scene crashed his vehicle near the intersection of Eagle Avenue and Rohret Road. The deputy was treated and released from a local hospital.

Both crashes are under investigation.
