A bankruptcy judge approved sale of Mercy Iowa City to the University of Iowa Monday.

In a release from the university, all current Mercy employees will be offered employment with UI Health Care.  In addition, providers not employed by UI Health Care will be able to practice at the facility under an open medical staff model.

The U of I plans to merge the organizations early next year; in the meantime, no immediate changes are planned for patients, employees, or physicians.  Patients with Mercy Iowa City are to continue to schedule and go to appointments as usual.

The court recently reopened the auction for Mercy Iowa City’s assets after the original winning bidder, Preston Hollow Community Capital, sparred with Mercy over how to fund operating losses after December 1st.  The University upped their original $20 million offer to $28 million to secure the Mercy assets.
