A local transient has been arrested after police say he was in possession of fentanyl.

50-year-old Jeffery Boney of the 501 Apartments was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 5:00 Saturday night. Iowa City Police say they originally took Boney into custody on an active warrant just before 10:45 p.m. on October 28th near the intersection of South Gilbert Street and Southgate Avenue. Two pills found in his pocket were sent to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations for testing. On December 13th the tests came back positive for fentanyl. Boney reportedly had no explanation for why he had the pills despite not having a prescription.

Boney is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.

The federal Drug Enforcement Agency says fentanyl overdoses kill approximately 200 people daily in the United States.
