The Iowa Democratic precinct caucuses will be a much different event than in previous years.

Mail-in ballots are replacing realignment and complicated math from previous caucuses. Tonight’s caucus meetings will be party-organizing only, with voters later expressing their choice for president via a mail-in process that began Friday when the first round of Presidential Preference cards was sent out.

So far, about 8000 requests have been received, with more expected in the coming weeks. Democrats have until 5pm on February 19th to request a card; they must be postmarked by March 5th to count. Results will be released on that day, known as Super Tuesday, when several other states will hold their primaries.
