An Iowa City man faces charges after allegedly taking a computer from the Iowa Memorial Union Book Store.

According to the warrant, 35-year-old Jaren Brooks of Crosspark Avenue entered the store the morning of April 9th. He was reportedly recorded by two separate surveillance cameras as he took a 16 inch MacBook Pro form a sale shelf before walking out of sight. Another camera showed him walking through the clothing section of store while stuffing the laptop into his jacket. He then allegedly walked out of the store without paying for the laptop.

The warrant was issued two days later.

On Monday, Brooks was in court and charged with 2nd degree Theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted. He was released on his own recognizance and a public defender was appointed. He will be arraigned at a later date.
