The Iowa City Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 445 Highway 1 West Saturday morning.
According to an ICFD news release, firefighters were called to the two-story mixed-use building at 7:25 a.m. Crews arrived within five minutes of being dispatched and encountered smoke coming from a second story apartment window. Fire was located within a second story apartment unit and firefighters contained the fire to that unit. The fire was under control 14 minutes after crews arrived on scene.
Three occupants left the apartment prior to the fire department’s arrival. Firefighters evacuated six other residents from neighboring apartments. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.
Damage to the building is estimated at $40,000 and the cause remains under investigation by the ICFD Fire Marshal’s Office.
