An Iowa City woman was taken into custody after allegedly turning violent because acquaintances wouldn’t let her drive after drinking.

Arrest records indicate that the incident occurred Tuesday at about 12:45am in the 1500 block of McCleary Lane. 24-year-old Amel Ali of Crosby Lane was invited over that evening for some alcoholic beverages. At some point during the evening Ali became upset and wanted to leave in her vehicle. One of the women at the residence said she withheld Ali’s keys to prevent her from driving drunk, causing Ali to become verbally and physically abusive.

One victim said she tried to reason with Ali and was pinned against a wall with Ali’s forearm and was pulled by her hair around the room. Another woman tried to intervene, and Ali pinned her against a closet door, allegedly choking her to the point where she couldn’t breathe,  She also bit her in the leg. Another woman alleges Ali pulled her by the hair causing her head to bleed, and sustained an injury to her finger.

Officers say that in an initial interview with Ali, she allegedly stated, “If I did anything, I pulled maybe someone’s hair. Because that’s where I thrive, rather than punching.” Ali added that she was struck on the head with a glass bottle, causing her to forget most of the incident. She did sustain an injury to her head requiring stitches.

Ali was taken into custody and charged with assault causing bodily injury, simple assault and assault with intent to inflict serious injury. If convicted on all charges she could be sentenced to over three years in prison.
