A Coralville man wanted in a pair of September assaults, including one attempted rape, has been taken into police custody.

The first incident Devon Patton, 29, of Boston Way, is accused in took place on Sept. 16 at an apartment a few doors down from his own apartment. Police say Patton and his girlfriend got into an argument which turned physical outside the girlfriend’s sister’s apartment that morning as Patton tried to take back a ring he had given her.

The sister then tried to intervene and both women fled back inside the apartment, where the sister’s juvenile son was also located. Patton allegedly kicked in the door and began swinging at everyone, hitting the sister in the face.

Police say he then broke her TV and dumped out her purse in the building’s common area before fleeing.

One week later, police say Patton went to his now ex-girlfriend’s apartment in the 1200 block of North Boston Way and asked to have sex before he left town. When the woman turned him down, Patton allegedly punched her in the head, neck and abdomen before ripping off her shirt and pants.

He’s then accused of picking up the woman and body slamming her before kicking her about her body, breaking her clavicle and nose.

There is no indication any sexual activity ever took place following that assault.

Patton, who already had a domestic abuse conviction from Cook County, Illinois, was booked into the Johnson County Jail on Thursday night on charges of Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse Causing Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, 1st Degree Burglary, Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault without Intent Causing Bodily Injury, and 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 36 years in prison.
