The University of Iowa has begun a new collaborative interdisciplinary grant fund, choosing five award winners for this year.

The Provost Investment Fund is meant to get multiple colleges across campus to work together on projects in an aim to further the UI’s standing against Association of American Universities metrics and the UI’s Strategic Plan.

The fund is allocating up to $300,000 to the five projects, which were selected from 23 proposals. Those receiving funding in the inaugural grants include OER Iowa – an Open Educational Resources project – the Iowa Initiative for Artificial Intelligence; Big Ideas, Big Impact: Interdisciplinary General Education Courses; Interdisciplinary, Scalable Solutions for a Sustainable Future; and Neuroscience Underlying Twice-Exceptional Talent Development.

Those projects were chosen by the Council of Deans and recommended to interim provost Sue Curry. In a statement, College of Education dean Daniel Clay says the selected projects will enhance the university’s core mission “in very important ways to benefit our teaching, research, and service.”

The funding is for up to three years and will be paid in installments. Project leaders will also have to provide annual progress reports before receiving each installment payment.
