An $8.5 million renovation is being planned for Hillcrest Residence Hall on the University of Iowa campus.

Per documents for this week’s Board of Regents meeting, the money would go toward updating and replacing floor, wall and ceiling finishes in student rooms, as well as corridors, lounges and elevator lobbies throughout the building.

In requesting the money for the renovations, officials say those facilities in the 80-year-old hall are aging and would be a way to “re-invest wisely” in existing facilities on campus. Construction would begin in the summer of 2020 and would occur over a four-year span.

Hillcrest houses more than 820 students, making it the largest residence hall on the west side of the Iowa River.
