Allegedly choking his girlfriend while the two were in a hospital waiting room has led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.

University of Iowa Police were called to the UI Hospitals and Clinics just after 1:30 Thursday afternoon after 19-year-old Zachary Stebens of Iowa Avenue began fighting with his girlfriend in a waiting room in the Pomerantz Family Pavilion’s family medicine clinic. Stebens was screaming and yelling while patients and staff were present, leading one woman to take her two small children and seek shelter in another room.

Police say Stebens grabbed his girlfriend and impeded her airway, leaving marks on her neck, upper arms and chest. A nurse was eventually able to push Stebens out of the clinic, attempting to close and secure the doors to hinder his re-entry.

Stebens was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow and Disorderly Conduct. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of over five years in prison.
