Police say a University of Iowa student was on a number of drugs when she attacked police officers trying to help her during a medical emergency, including trying to take an officer’s firearm.

First responders were called to an apartment on the 600 block of South Johnson Street for a possible overdose just after 2:45 Tuesday morning. A person at the apartment told police that one of the residents, identified as 20-year-old Brynn Cunningham, had consumed Xanax, hydrocodone and alcohol. When police told Cunningham an ambulance was on the way, she said she didn’t want to go and tried to stand up and leave on her own. When police tried to get Cunningham to sit back down, a struggle ensued, and she had to be restrained by multiple officers.

One officer was injured while trying to restrain Cunningham, who allegedly kicked the officer multiple times.

Officers located a Swisher Sweets package in Cunningham’s possession that contained two hydrocodone pills.

Cunningham was eventually taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she allegedly continually begged for an officer to kill her. She then allegedly grabbed for an officer’s firearm.

Cunningham is charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference with Official Acts Causing Bodily Injury, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Disarming a Police Officer. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum of eight years in prison.
