A beloved tree on the University of Iowa campus that was lost to a storm last summer will soon be replaced.

The European larch tree that had been a staple of the east side of the Pentacrest for about a half-century was snapped during a thunderstorm last September.

According to The Daily Iowan, UI President Bruce Harreld told the UI Student Government at its Tuesday night meeting that a replacement tree was on its way from Chicago, and would be put in the old larch tree’s place near the corner of Iowa Avenue and Clinton Street on Thursday, weather permitting.

The new tree is 15 years old. Harreld says it’s smaller than the old tree, but also stronger. He added that just like the old tree, students will be able to climb the new tree as well.
