The Solon city council has approved building a new fire station.

Approval for construction was ratified by the council and the Solon Fire Board earlier this week. While all the necessary money has not yet been raised, last weekend’s Solon firefighters’ pancake breakfast pushed the fundraising closer to the goal.

The Solon Fire Department is looking to replace its current firehouse, which was built in the 1950’s. According to the group’s web site, the original facility was designed when the department had just 25 members and five trucks and only ran approximately 50 calls a year. The Solon Fire Department now has 40 members and responds to approximately 400 calls a year.

Expansion at the current firehouse is not feasible because of the expansion of the downtown area around the current facility on Main Street. Storage space is also an issue. Some items must currently be stored outside.

A new firehouse would alleviate those problems, as well as provide more on-site parking for firefighter volunteers.
