A Chicago man was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon on multiple child endangerment charges after allegedly driving while intoxicated with six children in his vehicle.

Police say they stopped 29-year-old Darius Carr near the intersection of Heartland Drive and Coral Ridge Avenue after reportedly failing to obey the traffic light. Upon making contact with Carr, there was allegedly a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. He reportedly admitted to smoking earlier in the day.

One adult and six unrestrained young children were riding with Carr in the back seats.

A probable cause search turned up several open containers and remnants of a green leafy substance on the driver seat floor.  Field testing allegedly showed measurable impairment. Carr refused further testing, including breath and urine tests at the Coralville Police Department.

Carr has been charged with six counts of child endangerment as well as his first OWI. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 13 years in prison.
