A Springville man pulled over in Solon for defective plate lights was taken into custody when he allegedly was driving under the influence.

Police say the incident occurred Tuesday morning a little after 2:45 am. 42-year-old Zachary Kriz of Springville was stopped near the intersection of Market and 3rd Street because the rear license plate on his 2005 Jeep was not lit, and the plate wasn’t visible because he had a tinted license plate cover.

Upon contact, Kriz reportedly was talking rapidly, had his veins raised in his arms, and was twitchy. Deputies believed he was under the influence of something other than alcohol. A check of his driving status showed that his status was temporarily restricted and not valid without proper paperwork.

Kriz showed impairment on field testing, but a PBT showed no alcohol in his system. He then allegedly admitted to having methamphetamine in his backpack. A probable cause search of the Jeep reportedly located three glass pipes with burnt residue, and two baggies with a crystal-like substance. Kriz submitted to a urine test that is being sent for testing.

Kriz was charged with OWI Third offense, Meth possession, and Driving while Revoked. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
