A traffic stop for an equipment violation has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man for meth possession.

Police stopped 40-year-old Brandon Lefever Sunday just before 11pm because of a defective driver’s side brake light. During the ensuing encounter, a K9 conducted an open air sniff around the vehicle and indicated that narcotics were inside.

Officers conducted a probable cause search and located a backpack that allegedly contained multiple meth pipes, a scale with white residue, numerous small empty plastic baggies, and six individually packaged baggies containing methamphetamine. A field test confirmed the substance was meth, and Lefever reportedly admitted as such.

Police say there were over 23 grams of meth in the baggies.

An arrest warrant was granted by Johnson County Court on the 14th; Lefever was arrested later that day and charged with a Class B Controlled Substance violation Failure to Affix Tax Stamp, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

If convicted on all counts, Lefever faces a prison sentence of up to over 30 years.
