An area transient who is already facing years in prison for allegedly cashing stolen or forged checks faces new charges on similar allegations.

Iowa City Police say 28-year-old Tiara Roberts contacted her victim just before 6:45 p.m. on August 12th and asked him to help her cash a check. The man claimed he deposited the $382.41 check at Hills Bank in the Old Capitol Town Center and gave Roberts the funds. Two days later, the man reported the incident to police after he learned that Roberts had allegedly been involved in similar fraudulent transactions.

The original owner of the check told police he didn’t know Roberts and never gave her any checks or permission to use them. Hills Bank surveillance video reportedly shows Roberts and the alleged victim walking up to the ATM, depositing the check and Roberts taking the money directly from the machine.

Police say Roberts is facing other charges for similar incidents. She now faces charges of Forgery, Identity Theft and 4th Degree Theft in connection with the Hills Bank incident. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of eight years in prison.
