Iowa City man accused of choking his pregnant girlfriend

An Iowa City man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly assaulting and attempting to choke his pregnant girlfriend.

Police say the incident occurred at the Clapp Street residence of 24-year-old Dondre Lee last Friday night. A verbal argument allegedly began over a suspected infidelity. It reportedly escalated, and Lee attempted to strike the woman. He then allegedly put his hands around her neck and began to squeeze. He also reportedly pulled the pregnant woman’s hair.

Police say the altercation left visible marks on the woman’s neck, and she told them that while being choked she felt like she couldn’t breathe.

The incident allegedly took place in front of a child shared by Lee and the woman.

A warrant was issued leading to his arrest on charges of Domestic Assault on a Pregnant Person with Intent to Injure, Domestic Assault on a Pregnant Person Impeding Airflow, and Child Endangerment. If convicted on all charges, Lee could be sentenced to up to twelve years in prison.

Judge Brandon Schrock issued a No Contact order between the couple Wednesday. Lee allegedly broke it later that day by calling his mother and having her conference the protected party in. Lee then allegedly asked her about the criminal case, dropping charges, and creating at TextNow number in order to continue breaking the no-contact order. He was cited for contempt.
