A West Liberty man was arrested Wednesday after an alleged assault on his wife in downtown Iowa City over the summer.

Police say the incident occurred near the Graduate Hotel on South Dubuque Street the evening of June 24th.  31-year old Yonathan Gonzalez and his wife of six months reportedly got into a verbal argument, with Gonzalez attempting to leave in his wife’s car after consuming alcohol.

Gonzalez’ wife attempted to stop him from driving, but he allegedly kicked her in the lower left side while repeatedly pushing and striking her. Police noted the woman had scratch marks where Gonzalez reportedly grabbed her, and were shown video of the incident.

A arrest warrant was issued on June 27th and Gonzalez remained at large until he was booked at the Johnson County Jail Wednesday morning. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury and simple Assault. If convicted on both charges, Gonzalez could be sentenced to up to 13 months in jail.

A no contact order was issued by Judge Brandon Schrock.
