Former Coralville mayor Kattchee dies

Former Coralville mayor Michael Kattchee has died.

Kattchee died on April 20th at his home. He was 92. He served as Coralville mayor from 1978-1993. Before that, he served on the city council from 1966 to 1977.

The native Lithuanian was mayor during the beginning of the city’s economic boom that would eventually lead to the creation of the Coral Ridge Mall. He also oversaw construction of a new Coralville city hall, public library, fire station and recreation facility.

Kattchee was also instrumental in the early development stages of the Iowa River Landing and the University of Iowa’s Oakdale Research Park.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Coralville United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 11 at 2:00 pm, with a gathering in the CUMC Community Room following. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Michael Kattchee Memorial Fund at Hills Bank.
