The shuttered Iowa River Power Restaurant building is hoping to have new life by the fall of 2026.
Iowa Magazine reports University of Iowa alum Mark Kaufman purchased the property last fall, formed a development group, and hired former roommate and alum Tom Beardsley to oversee the renovations. The Coralville City Council approved tax incentives to allow the group to improve the building while maintaining its historic features.
Kaufmann has been in discussions with a potential restaurant group that will oversee the menu and the concept of the establishment. He says he will leave it to the new restaurant group to decide whether to continue the business under the Iowa River Power moniker.
The Iowa River Power Restaurant opened in 1977 and closed its doors in November 2023.
