A transient who absconded from a Linn County halfway house in 2016 and who has been wanted in Johnson County since 2015 is back in police custody.

Chad Sharkey had been serving a sentence at the Anchor Center in Cedar Rapids for a 1st Degree Theft charge when he signed out on a three-hour pass on Feb. 26, 2016. Anchor Center officials say Sharkey did not return within that three-hour period and, despite officers calling local hospitals and multiple jails, did not locate him for the next three days.

He was then officially listed as escaped. At the time, he had been facing a Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense charge in Johnson County.

Court records show the now-24-year-old was taken into custody by Linn County officials in December, pleading guilty to a Voluntary Absence from Custody charge and agreeing to pay a $315 fine.

Sharkey still faces the possession charge, as well as a probation violation on the theft charge. If convicted on the former charge, he could be sentenced to up to two years in jail.
