IC man arrested for assaulting pregnant girlfriend

An Iowa City man has been taken into custody after an alleged assault on his pregnant girlfriend.
Arrest reports indicate officers were called to the Forest View Trailer Court for reports of a domestic incident at a house party. It’s alleged that 19 year old Gerardo Mendoza of the Waterfront Trailer Park and his girlfriend, who is 23 weeks pregnant, got into an argument over possible infidelity.
During the argument, Mendoza, who had been drinking, allegedly grabbed the woman by the arms and threw her onto a bed before they were separated by a witness.
The woman tried to separate herself from Mendoza and left the party, but he followed her, throwing her phone and keys when he caught up to her and continued to argue with her. She tried to retrieve her belongings, but Mendoza then threw her to the ground and held her down in a puddle, allegedly saying, “this is what you want? This is what you get.”
The woman returned to the party in hysterics with mud in her hair, and was taken to Mercy ER for evaluation for herself and unborn child. She told authorities this isn’t the first time Mendoza has laid hands on her, and she is in fear of future abuse.
Mendoza was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing injury and a no-contact order was requested. If convicted for the incident he could be sentenced to up to a year in prison.
