A student from West High School has been named a 2022 US Presidential Scholar by the Department of Education.
In a release from the DOE, Jonathan Chen was named one of only three students in the state to receive the award, and one of only 161 nationwide.
The program was created in 1964, and this year’s group is comprised of one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 chosen at-large, 20 scholars in the arts and 20 scholars in career and technical education.
Presidential Scholars are chosen based on their academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.
The other two Iowa Presidential Scholars are Kavya Kalathur of Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf and Maxwell Aulwes of Chariton High School, who was named in the Career and Technical Education category.
The Presidential Scholars Class of 2022 will be recognized for their outstanding achievement this summer with an online recognition program.
