City High may soon have a new athletic director.

School officials have recommended Phillip Hansen for the position on an interim basis. The interim label would be in place until Hansen has completed his master’s degree in Educational Administration, which will be completed in December.

Hansen is a 2009 graduate of Cary-Grove High School in Cary, Illinois and attended the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a degree in secondary math education in 2013. He has since continued his graduate education in the UI Education Leadership Program. Hansen has served as a math teacher at City High since 2014. In addition to teaching math, Hansen has been an assistant varsity men’s soccer coach and is currently the school’s varsity women’s soccer head coach.

Pending approval from the Iowa City Community School Board, Hanson would begin serving in his new role on July 1st. But that approval may not come unanimously. Earlier this week school board member Phil Hemmingway suggested cutting athletic director positions in the district altogether. His suggestion was met with derision from other school board members.
