A University of Iowa student accused of sexual assault has been given a suspended sentence.
Online records show 22-year-old Charles Henrichs of Governor Street agreed to plead guilty to a charge of Assault Causing Bodily Injury in a deal with prosecutors. A more serious charge of 3rd Degree Sexual Abuse was dropped.
Henrichs was accused in a sexual assault in the 200 block of Iowa Avenue on April 29th, 2018. About 2 a.m. that day, police say a woman was walking on the sidewalk when she saw Henrichs approaching her. The two knew each other prior to that meeting and stopped to talk.
It’s during that conversation Henrichs is accused of slipping his hand inside the woman’s pants and sexually assaulting her. The woman told police she had not given him consent for any sexual contact and she punched Henrichs before leaving the scene.
Post-arrest, Henrichs allegedly denied the incident happened or knowing the victim at all. However, police say nearby surveillance video captured the incident.
If convicted on the initial charge, Henrichs could have faced a maximum of ten years in prison. Instead, he was given a one-year suspended sentence, two years of probation and a $315 fine.
