A junior high student who allegedly made threats and brought knives to school now faces more charges.
Administrators at Southeast Junior High were made aware on May 8th of a threat towards the school made by a pair of students. Staff investigated the threat and, in the process, confiscated two knives from one of the students.
Administrators immediately contacted Iowa City Police, who responded to the school to investigate. They determined there was no immediate threat to the school.
Police have now charged the student who brought the knives to the school with Going Armed with Intent and Threats of Terrorism. That’s in addition to an initial charge of Carrying Weapons. Investigators say they added the new charges after consulting Juvenile Court and the Johnson County Attorney’s Office.
Police say the alerting of school officials, by multiple students, about a possible safety threat was key to preventing what they believe would have been a violent act from occurring.
