It should come as no surprise to anyone to hear that this year is the wettest period of precipitation in Iowa City history.

From January through Wednesday morning, the city has received 22.54 inches of precipitation. The previous record was set in 2013 with 22.39 inches, and the third most was in 1973 with 22.12 inches.

Farmers who have yet to get their fields planted are running out of time, as they need a week or two of no rain to dry out the soil and forecasts are not cooperating.

Farmers face a June 15th deadline for planting fields to be eligible for crop insurance benefits.

Government bailouts from the US Department of Agriculture will be based on planted acres.
