Senator Joe Bolkcom of Iowa city and State representative John Forbes of Urbandale want to call a special legislative session to resurrect a marijuana bill that Governor Reynolds vetoed.
The Governor has defended her veto of medical marijuana expansion as too much of a jump, but Forbes, a pharmacist, says the legislation would provide needed relief to suffering Iowans.
The bill passed the House 96-3 and the Senate 40-7. If a special session is convened, it would take a two-thirds vote from both chambers to overturn the Governor’s veto.
The bill would have removed the 3 percent cap on THC and instead limit the amount of medical marijuana a patient could be prescribed over a 90-day period. Supporters of the bill say the 3 percent cap is too ineffective to relieve pain suffered by those with debilitating medical conditions.
