An Iowa City man who has been wanted for a home invasion and vehicle theft over three years ago was arrested Wednesday and is in custody.

On April 3rd, 2016, now 24-year-old transient Markelle Washington was found at a residence on the 700 block of Iowa Avenue before 12:30am when the residents of the home arrived to find their residence had been broken into, and Washington was found in one of their vehicles.

They made contact with Washington, who fled in the vehicle.

A subsequent investigation into the matter revealed that Washington and another suspect burglarized the residence, and both had a history of burglaries in the area. One of the residents was able to identify Washington in a photo line-up as the one who stole the vehicle, valued at $10,000.

Washington was already on parole for burglary and theft charges stemming from incidents in September of 2015. When he failed to report to his probation officer as required, a warrant was issued for his arrest on that violation.

Sheriff’s records indicate that Washington was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 11:43pm Wednesday; no details are available on the circumstances of his arrest.

Washington faces First and Third Degree Theft charges, two charges of 3rd Degree Burglary, and  two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on all charges, Washington could face up to nineteen years in prison.
