An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly punching his girlfriend because of her restless sleeping.
Police were contacted by Mercy Hospital staff at approximately 2am Thursday for a woman who had injuries from an assault. During an interview, the woman told authorities that her boyfriend of eight years slapped her multiple times, then punched her in the eye for restlessly sleeping, which caused him to wake up.

The man in question, 55-year-old Christopher Douglas, admitted to authorities that he had punched the woman, but claimed that she was kicking and hitting him in her sleep and he was only practicing self-defense.
