A sex offender from Chicago faces charges in Coralville after he allegedly moved into the area without informing authorities.
According to arrest records, 57-year-old Norvell Pickett was pulled over for speeding by Iowa City Police near the corner of Mormon Trek Boulevard and Benton Street around noon on Saturday. Pickett gave the fake name “Kenith Johnson”, but the name given could not be found in Iowa or Illinois records.
Pickett had officers come with him to his residence at the Iowa Lodge on The Coralville Strip to verify his identity. Once there, police say Pickett did not provide proof of his identity, but did say he worked at The Vine. Officers found several pay stubs from The Vine in Pickett’s apartment that included his real name.
Pickett then told investigators he had been in Iowa since January, and the building manager from the Iowa Lodge confirmed that he was a current resident there. Pickett is a sex offender from Chicago, and currently has a Sex Offender Registry Violation from that area.
Pickett is charged with a Sex Offender Registry Violation and Providing False Identification Information. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in prison.
