Allegedly kicking a pregnant woman in the stomach after a fight on Facebook turned physical has led to an Iowa City woman’s arrest.
Iowa City Police were called to an address on Westwinds Drive just before 12:45 Friday afternoon after a woman reported being stabbed in the arm with a knife. Investigators learned that 25-year-old Mercedes Hendrix of Davis Street and another woman had earlier been involved in an argument on Facebook. The argument was heated enough that the alleged victim felt threatened by Hendrix’s comments.
Hendrix then confronted the woman in-person. The physical altercation allegedly included Hendrix kicking the other woman twice in the stomach. The woman is 34 weeks pregnant.
Hendrix claimed she only shoved the other woman in self-defense to prevent further injuries to ones she had already sustained. Both parties were then transported to the hospital.
Hendrix was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 5:30 Saturday morning and charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and 3rd Degree Harassment. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 13 months behind bars.
There is no indication if charges are pending against the other woman.
