A false hold-up alarm at a convenience store led to the arrest of a North Liberty man on driving while intoxicated charges.
According to arrest reports, a North Liberty police officer was talking to a member of the public Sunday night at approximately 11:25 when he observed a man driving a Lincoln stop and enter the Smokin’ Joe’s Tobacco and Liquor Outlet on Highway 965.
A short time later, the man left the store and began to get into the vehicle just as the officer was dispatched to the same location for a hold-up alarm.
The man, identified as 37-year-old Adam Dreyer of Prairie Ridge Road, began to drive away, but the officer flagged him down to ask if he had seen anything suspicious in the store while he was there.
The officer states that upon contact, he was hit with the overwhelming odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Dreyer also allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes.
The officer was then informed that the alarm was a false one, caused by an employee error.
A PBT of Dreyer showed a blood-alcohol content of .154, which dropped to a .105 by the time he was given a Datamaster test at the Coralville Police Department.
Dreyer has one prior OWI from July of 2017. He was charged with his second, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years if convicted.
