After an over two-year period, and a 30 day warning period, have Cedar Rapids-area motorists slowed down now that the speed cameras on I380 are back on?
The numbers tell the tale.
Public Safely Communications Coordinator Greg Buelow says that the automated traffic enforcement cameras have issued just over 4000 speeding citations since July 1st. Buelow says those numbers are preliminary as police have only verified those issued in the first week.
They also include all nine cameras in the city, not just the four on the interstate. But the statistics indicate that most of the violations are indeed on I380.
Over 2100 were cited going 21-25 miles an hour over the speed limit and if verified will be fined $250. 574 others were caught going 26-30 miles over; that’s a $500 fine. The top speed clocked by the cameras in July was 111 miles per hour.
Drivers seem to be much better at obeying traffic signals. The cameras only caught 60 running red lights.
