Iowa City Police have arrested a man they say passed out while driving on Highway 1 during the morning commute.
23-year-old Brandon Shoup of South Amana was found unconscious behind the wheel of his car on westbound Highway 1 near Mormon Trek Boulevard around 9:45 Monday morning. Shoup was conscious by the time paramedics arrived, and his shirt was covered in vomit.
Investigators say Shoup smelled of ingested alcohol, had slurred speech and was pale and cold to the touch.
Shoup told police he’d had two shots at a bar at 6am. He failed field sobriety tests, and his blood alcohol concentration was measured at .156 on a portable Breathalyzer test. He refused Datamaster testing.
Police say Shoup became unresponsive while interacting with them and was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for evaluation. He was released Tuesday morning and charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
