A man caught on surveillance video stealing a bike in downtown Iowa City has been apprehended.

According to police, 48-year-old Brett Young of Tranquil Bluff Road was seen on video stealing a Northrock bike valued at $500 from the southeast exterior bike rack at the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center on South Madison Street this past Thursday afternoon.

The footage shows Young walking to the rack and riding away with the bike; he didn’t have permission from the owner to take it, and had not returned it.

He was booked into the Johnson County Jail early Tuesday morning and charged with 3rd degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years.

A check of court records revealed that Young has multiple prior theft convictions, including a 3rd degree theft charge in 1991 and a 2nd degree theft charge in 2017.
