A Muscatine man faces charges that he shot and killed a woman at a park east of Nichols.
Muscatine County Attorney Alan R. Ostergren told The Muscatine Journal that 23-year-old David Hatfield called 9-1-1 on Wednesday to report that 18-year-old Kaitlyn Palmer had shot herself in the head at the Saulsbury Recreation Area in rural Muscatine County. She was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she died Thursday.
Hatfield later admitted to investigators that he had shot Palmer in the head. He added that he had fired a practice shot first.
Hatfield is charged with 1st Degree Murder, a Class A felony punishable by life in prison. He’s being held on $1 million bond.
