Fighting underneath an Iowa City bridge has led to a West Liberty man’s arrest.
Police were called to the Gilbert Street bridge over Ralston Creek, next to Falbo’s Pizza, just after 6:30 Thanksgiving night for a fight in progress. An investigation determined that 32-year-old Jonathan Mitchell of West 7th Street had punched a woman in the face multiple times. Arriving officers heard the woman screaming for help, and she had suffered facial injuries. Investigators found the woman down in the creek with her upper body and hair wet.
When asked if he struck the woman, Mitchell reportedly said, “I can’t say yes and I can’t say no, because I don’t remember.” He did admit to arguing with the woman, and a witness said he had hit her. Mitchell showed multiple signs of intoxication.
Police say Mitchell was uncooperative with their investigation. He allegedly yelled at them and had to be escorted to the top of the bridge by four officers. During the walk to the top of the bridge, Mitchell reportedly tried falling on his face several times. He then began slamming his head against a squad car and kicking the vehicle, causing self-harm. Mitchell was eventually taken to the ground, where police say he continued resisting.
Mitchell was already wanted for an October 4th incident at the North Dodge Hy-Vee. Arrest records indicate Mitchell shoplifted $93.09 in merchandise just before 3pm that day. He was confronted by Hy-Vee staff and gave them his name, but he was able to flee the scene before police could arrive. He later claimed he stole the groceries because he was hungry.
Mitchell is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Public Intoxication, Interference With Official Acts and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 15 months in jail.
