A Cedar Rapids man with two previous OWI’s made it a 3rd after being caught with an open bottle of vodka early Monday.

Officers witnessed a black SUV in the intersection of Coral Ridge Avenue and 2nd Street at approximately 2:50am improperly facing northbound. They made contact with the driver, identified as 42-year-old Michael Schoon of Northbrook Drive Northeast, and he allegedly had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and the odor of ingested alcohol.

An open bottle of Hawkeye Vodka was discovered in the passenger seat.

Schoon reportedly was swaying while standing and unable to follow directions to check his sobriety. He refused all testing as well as blood and urine samples.

Schoon had two previous OWI convictions in Linn County, in 2012 and 2015.

He’s been charged with his 3rd OWI, a Class D felony punishable by a maximum prison sentence of five years if convicted.
