An Iowa City man who reportedly was intoxicated is accused of threatening his girlfriend with a broom during an alleged assault.

Arrest reports indicate officers were sent to the 1100 block of Saint Clement Street Monday afternoon for an unknown problem. The reporting party said that her live-in boyfriend of 8 months, 57-year-old Herbert Mather, was out of control and destroying things in the house.

When officers arrived, the woman reported that Mather was drunk and assaulted her during an argument. She alleges that he threatened to sexually violate her, then pushed her down near the bed and kicked her in the legs. Mather then reportedly held up a broom in an intimidating manner and threatened to hit the woman with it.

Mather’s girlfriend had bruising and a small abrasion on her arm, and pain in her legs from being kicked.

He was arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
