The 2019 home season may be over for the Iowa football team, but fans will still have two chances this month to wave at the children in the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Fans at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego will be asked to do “The Wave” at the end of the first quarter of the game between No. 19 Iowa and No. 22 USC on Dec. 27. The wave will be directed at patients in the children’s hospital in Iowa City, as well as representatives from two children’s hospitals in Southern California who will be at the game. The wave will replicate what has become a game-day salute at Iowa home games to patients and family members at the hospital.
A grassroots effort is also gaining momentum on Facebook to do a “Wave” outside the children’s hospital just before Christmas. The Facebook event “Holiday Wave at Stead Family Children’s Hospital” is asking people to gather outside the children’s hospital on Hawkins Drive at 6:30pm on Monday, December 23rd to wave at the patients and families above. Those interested in attending are asked to bring flashlights or use the lights on their smartphones.
